not true. you CAN use UK electrical items in the US, just as you can use
US items in the UK. in fact, its easier to go t'other way - look at your
tower PSU - you might even see a 110/220V switch on it. flick it over,
and your machine runs on 110v power, still giving the required current
and voltage to the motherboard and drives etc
=20
what you WILL have a problem with is shipping of the item. but thats
just a minor issue
theres plenty of US Amiga people...where are you going to?

No, it depends on which syllable is stressed; if it's the first one,
then you're right, but otherwise the 'a' can pretty well sound like
a short 'er'.

make sure you have a backup of your sys: partition. (best way is just
copy it toa drawer on the other partition. what? You've got your
workbench on a 1gb partition? oh.
anyway, once you've done that, install OS3.5
what it will do it update the bits that it needs to - and move things to
'backup' drawers. After you've installed, you can move those thigns
back...one by one.. to where they were. and thats it

Not sure about that - it's incompatible with some old drives, notably some
A1010s, and making it a standard part of the operating system when it has
the potential to damage some official Amiga hardware may not be a
wonderful idea.

AF 98, page 99... but only as a quotation in the headline. I'm almost sure
I've seen it clearly included in the dialogue somewhere else ( AUI, Amiga
Computing or some previous issue of Afb... I'll have a look. )
BTW, I still don't know if 'Amiga' is stressed on the first or the second

total -> about 550
Please people, dont forget that these are prices you could ask Amiga
people for - as they would be after such setups...and quipment. If you
are trying to sell to a 'newbie' you'd have to take some more off -
because , as you can see, the total amount comes to an amount that
someone can get a whole PC package for...and such people dont know any
better :-|
(there again, certain HW - printers/modems/HD's can be sold for slightly
more in the 2nd hand PC market......or kept for your next machine)

I don't know if this is of any help, but I had the same problem when I first
purchased the Micronik ZII board. Have you tried it with the Apollo out
(just to get the bootup screen) as it was the conflicting addresses of the
ZII board and the Apollo causing my problems.
Don't forget if you have a graphics cards attached to it you'll need a Video
Adaptor (I know it seems obvious - but I forgot about this)

I did exactly the same a couple of months ago, and I've never looked back
since. I advertised on here first for someone with a second hand Blizzard
1260/50 for sale and I found one (Mark Smith is still on this list i think
;)
As for the Apollo/Blizzard thing, I think the Blizzard is faster, allows you
to fit a SCSI-II kit to it, giving you access to SCSI HD's and stuff, aloows
you a maximum of 192Mb RAM (with the SCSI-II kit installed) AND allows you
to disable it by holding down 2 when you reboot.
It is also capable of storing ROM images in Fast RAM (dunno whether the
Apollo does this or not though). In short, get the Blizzard..
and don't worry when you see weird copper effects when you plug it in and
boot up, it just tells you that its working correctly ;)

Hi all,
My printer has just stopped responding to commands from the A1200.
The self test works, and the same symptoms apply to another printer
I've got.
This leads me to assume it is either the parallel port or the cable
which is the problem.
Seeing as I can use a scanner in the port, I expect it is the cable
which is the problem, but I can't be sure.
So, does anyone know of a way of checking all the pins are working
okay in the parallel port?
Thanks for any advice

Well, not too put too fine a point on it, I have had some probs with my
machine. I had to repart my hd for a start. OS3.5 needs about 20mb to
install, and my drive had a 19mb part. DOH!
It seems to all be working fine atm. I'd make sure you have upto date
backups first tho. I'm glad I did! :-)
I know others on this list have mentioned their probs with 3.5. It is worth
it afterwards tho, trust me :-)
Is it me, or is screen changing now quicker with 3.5? Anyone else noticed
this?

Yep, a perfectly good reason to stop paying for it, IMO.

Because the speaker is turned off, probably. I think, but I'm not
sure, that if you do get this beep it will interfere with data
transmission and cause your modem to drop the line. I think that's
what happened to me a couple of times.

Not neccessary, the modem will automatically disconnect when it hears
it.

Yes, you can; either change it to see it if works fine, or just open both
plugs ( removing the screws and then the plastic covers ) to make sure each
soldering is ok. I know it seems stupid, but I often accused the printer or
the parallel port until I found out that a wire had been torn off inside the
plug, after removing and plugging it again too often.
Hope it will be as simple as that!

Arrgh. Oh no, someone please help!!!
I am a loyal, devote Amiga owner. To support the future of Amiga I bought
OS 3.5. I followed the instructions but my Workbench partition was too
small, so I had to fiddle with Work too, and something went horribly wrong.
I have lost my partition and have had to reinstall everything from scratch
:-(
Including Cinema 4D.
The only problem is that I cannot find the piece of paper that I wrote the
serial no.s down on, so I would be really grateful if some kind person on
this would e-mail me the serial no.s
And please include the magic link no. too cos I have lots of Lightwave
objects to convert.
Thank you

I've just been looking at the website for Cog, a research project into
artificial intelligence at MIT. In order to gain insights into human
intelligence the boffins at MIT have built a robotic torso (that bears a
disturbing resemblance to C3PO) and have given it different sensory inputs
(vision, proprioceptors in the joints. Hearing and touch will be
implemented later). They are hoping that it will learn to control its
"body" through interactions with the environment.
What does this have to do with the Amiga? Erm, nothing directly. But I was
interested to see what kind of processing power they'd given this robot.
It seems that they're using QNX!
The URL is:
http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/cog/ComputationalSystem/computational_system.html
Mark_H
P.S. I'm not trying to start up another QNX vs. Linux row - I don't know
much about either of them. All I want from a future machine or OS is one
that is as nice to use as my Amiga is now, but without the limitations
that my current Amiga has. I'd also quite like the moon on a stick.

Yep, good idea (although the MCP one works fine here).
Also, a Path manager. Not quite as useful, but pretty handy at times.

If your PC is writing them in Joliet format (almost certainly the
default) you'll need either CacheCDFS (in IDEfix or OS 3.5) or AsimCDFS
to read them. Alternatively, set the PC to create Rockridge format CDs,
in which case any decent Amiga CD filesystem can read them.

This isn't possible because the drive in the PSX is a custom drive made by
sony (afaik) it is a max 2xspeed. Even if you could put a 24x drive in the
PSX would still only read it at 2x :/

Awww cripes, are we still stuck with that stupid drive clicking? Of all

Well no, being informed that there's likely to be a fault in the text
rendering is probably good, if annoying.
For what it's worth neither of you two's messages appear to have any
problems on my reader (YAM 2.0). That'd most likely be different,
though, if you typed any characters other than the usual typographical
ones. YAM has character conversion ability (supposedly), not that I'd
figured out what it does if not specifically told to do it, but the
Windows 1252 character set encoding doesn't appear to be amongst the
supported ones.

Hello Matthew,

In this case, it is directly, and it isn't directly. The basic formalae
says it is directly, but there are enough of other influencing factors,
for you to be correct in just saying proportional.
You'll find a lot of things that teachers go nuts about are irrelevent
(like putting the figure for ohms at the end of a calculation working
out resistors, when asked what the resistance is. Someone in the real
trade might say 30k (not bothering to put 30 kilo ohms).
Or for a real world exercise, watch a TV tech fix a tv set with little
more than a screwdriver and soldering iron. He hits the circuits with
the screwdriver, until he finds the dodgy component (converting an
intermittent fault into permanent fault). This guy fixes three or four
sets in the same time as an engineer fixes one.

Working out what OEM is can be a bit of a wild guess. Most people think
it's Original Equipment Manufacturer, other people say it means Other
Equipment Manufacturer (non-original). Which means that it gets used
for both meanings. And before anybody flames me, it DOES get used both
ways.

I didn't have that problem (because I don't have a ROOT user), but I was
trying to figure out the IDentD thingy in AmIRC (the tickbox on mine
was permanently ghosted out).
I temporarily deactived the auth service in InetD (I use Miami, by the
way), then AmIRC allowed me to change the setting in that tickbox. If
you have an IDent (auth) service already running, AmIRC will use it,
and won't let you use it's own.
I've only briefly looked at Genesis and AmiTCP, both are nasty pieces of
work. But I wonder this: Is there somewhere you select the user that
you log on with, from the list of possible entries in the user
database?

Hello Ted,

There are a few problems. Your drive may not be able to read a
re-writeable (physically). Your file system may not be able to either.
And re-writeables have a few different (non-standard) ways of being
created.

Not with that system of call waiting. Very few MODEMs will keep the
connection when being interrupted by a foreign noise on the line, and
even if you can get yours to, chances are the ISP will give up in
disgust.
All of that precludes doing something to detect the beep and act upon
it. Which is why true computer nerds often have a second phone line.
Alternatively, some phone companies are now offering a service where
you run a voice mail system at the phone company to instantly grab
incoming calls when the line is busy, and an internet interface (some
form of notification to you that you've got a message, probably e-mail;
and a method to listen to the message as a wave file on the computer).
The next step is internet telephony, which can be done between one
person on the internet, and the other person using the ordinary phone
system.

Ah, really it isn't. I'm trying to cut back on big new features

Hey, I get paid to *work* with this stuff every day, work-experience-boy!
The places I've been where I didn't get paid for it (at college)
even had software installation systems - you install the software
on a test machine, put the files on a server, and they propagate
when the system starts up.

Assuming that you're either using NT or Windows98 with Group Policies
enabled (and active - you *DO* have security set up don't you?) you'd
need to log in as the local administrator of the machine to actually
change settings, otherwise the GP stops the system saving them. It's
like turing all the Save buttons into Use ones.

Hey, room bookings take priority over systems maintenance. If that
room was booked
Come on, Neil, I do what you're doing (did?) there EVERY DAY.
You're moaning about stuff that you'll eventually learn isn't
worth moaning about.
i.e. Windows being lame, Microsoft being dominant (not for long :)
systems being set up wrong (not *our* systems, but Physics and MCS
and Geology all have servers which they maintain - badly IMO) and
room timetables.

LOL! that's about right. I actually have some programs installed that
use the MMU (muForce, muFastROM blah blah blah) and VMM doesn't like
them. Forgive me for wanting a stable system, using a friendly MMU

if the CD is is09660 with or without Joliet, then sure, you can read a
'PC formatted' CROM .
however, its probably actually the MEDIA that is causing you grief. in
not too many words, CDRW are notorious for not being readable in normal

Theres not much to print or write about this. The RC5-64 client (rc5des)
is a secure client which contains no virus and it just runs for as long
as you let it run. Sure, its not a productivity application, but its
doing real CPU work at the best rate that it can (unlike SETI, which is
alluring, but wastes a lot of CPU time :-( ). My recommendation is to
get the latest RC5-64 client from the d.net site. And if there is ANY
worry about it 'getting a virus for the machine' when it connects, then
dont let the client use its networking ability (and just send and
receive blocks via email instead - details on the web site)

PSUs are frequency independant. Afterall, they are supposed to deliver
pure DC to the computer (though they don't).
If David is intending to use a TV until he can buy a new monitor, the
early startup control can be used to switch to NTSC, or you can get TVs
which are capable of displaying both types of signal.

I agree completely. It takes about 25 seconds for all the icons in my
Prefs draw to load up. Then add another 10 or 20 seconds to workout
where the prefs program I want is. The MUI way is muchly preferable
(pun?).
A `Big Prefs Program` is not nescessary - just a prefs program launcher
would do.

Yes, but you have to remember this is a high school. The kids are
no-where near as experienced at using the machines, and therefore, we
can take as long as we like to set things up. Our college has one of
these software installation systems. Just because this school doesn't,
it doesn't mean it's a shithole, it just does things the hard way.

Doesn't the EZ-Tower have a switchable voltage power supply? If that's the
case you won't need to sell anything, and if you were serious about staying
with the Amiga after selling that lot, then why sell the software - it
doesn't care what voltage system you're operating on...

Something I found out from a web page after buying my CD-RW, you can only
read CD-RW disks in a CDRW drive. You can read normal CDR's in any drive.
It's all to do with the reflectivity of disks. Approx 70% for an original,
60% for a CDR, 15% for a CDRW, only really new CDR's will be able to read
CDRW disks. Or something :)
You may be having trouble with that.
Hope it helps,
Tom

Just to let you know, there is a new version of MCP
(it's actually a bit old now, but newer than the one
on Aminet anyway) which is a lot more system friendly
and has a COMPLETELY system friendly commodity version
albeit with lots of features unavailable.
If you're having problems with MCP and OS3.5, I suggest
you get the latest version and live without the features
that Michael has removed (the hacky hack hack ones) and
if you use the friendly commodity version cry because
only the really mundane ones are implemented ;)

YAM *does* send your message to afb, but eGroups sends me and the other

go onto the list. The "daily limit" runs between 8AM-8AM GMT because
eGroups are based on the west coast of America and are at least 8 hours

Well that (output) doesn't imply it can handle any type of input
current, *but* manufacturers like the idea of producing one power
supply that can be used world wide (instead of several different
models). So if yours has a 110/240 Volt switch, then it can probably
handle 50 or 60 Hz mains too. As a point of interest, 240 V mains is
often 50 Hz, and 110 V mains is often 60 Hz.

True, but some newer read-only drives can read them. Conversely, I'd

That's not quite true. The original PSXs had 1x drives, but the ones you get

show a quick evolutionary step. Perhaps even get non os3.5 owners to

Now they've had more time, and have finished OS3.5, so should know the
system better, I can ask them this weekend in K=F6ln...

That sounds like static frying a CIA chip. I had sparks when
hot-swapping a serial cable once (I know you're not supposed to do it
but I was in a hurry). The serial port died until I replaced the driver
chip. Thank God for I/O cards using standard, 80p components.

True, but it would require total rewrites of large chunks of code. It's
by no means a trivial addition.

Good point. CD-RWs *can* use UDF, as can CD-Rs. UDF is a software thing,
not a function of the medium, but since PC programs can often write UDF
and Amiga filesystems can't read it, you've probably found the cause.

My prefs drawer takes roughly 20 seconds to load. Most of the icons are
newicons, and (I don't know whether this is just me or not) but DOpus
seems slower on window loading.

hi,
I was wondering , particularly with Matt here, whether there is a clear
resource list which shows which patches are clearly redundant with os3.5
I've been slowly putting thigns back into my startup-sequence (yes, bad
boy, let that woman from last months issue spank me ;-)) and saw a few
that might now be dead.
newwpa8 -> is this now covered by the new setpatch (which, when in
verbose reports about gfx things patched)
cmq060 -> is memory copying also fixed up for the 060?

The old SetPatch reported a fix too, the thing has always worked to
a certain degree. NewWPA8 just makes it faster, and adds 2 new
problems into the mix ;)
> cmq060 -> is memory copying also fixed up for the 060?
CMQ060 is a hack, and should be disabled whether you use OS3.5
or not. AmigaOS makes no provisions for the MOVE16 instruction,
as far to say that it is UNSUPPORTED and not strictly system
legal to use it.
If you like your caches, your sanity, and to keep a clean system,
you'll use CMQ030 instead, which is optimised enough to make
a difference, but doesn't cause any strange side-effects like
the 060 version DOES and WILL!

be prepared for quite a refreshing installation....yellow and red.
interesting.
anyway, anyone upgrading, make sure it does actually install os3.5!
I've not mentioned it here...but i will do in case others have the same
problem.
After I installed os3.5 I read some documentation on the CD...multiview
loaded up the text, then froze. oh dear. this was on a 'clean os3.5
install' - ie none of my old stuff back into the startup yet ;-)
So i rebooted..then tried some prefs...printer prefs..what the!! this is
the os3.1 prefs program!!
solution? Easy, do the install manually
copy cd0:theos3.5drawer/workbench sys: all dates clone
this copied all the c: devs: libs: etc to the sys: drawer - and the
prefs, utils, tools etc.
multiview then worked fine (new version, new datatypes etc) and every
other program is the proper os3.5 one.
the reason for the failure? Well, this is why I should have been on the
beta team ;-) I had a picture file in my sys:prefs/presets drawer
called 'backdrops' - a little picture of water droplets for the
background...this killed the copy process...but the installer didnt
notice.
so, be cautious...just make sure that all the new programs are there,
and all will be well! :-)

It only lets one task use it "at a time", corrupting the output
data or something.
The original patch used to trash the original data, but seeing as
the main use is to do Doom Clones where the screen updates
frequently it's not that much of a problem...

Then you're oh-so lucky. It will cause problems. And you'll never
notice them either - a program will crash with a freak error and you'll
NEVER be able to trace it back to CMQ060.
It's a system-illegal patch! It does bad things!

Newer drives have more powerful lasers, so they can read less reflective
discs. The age of the drive is also significant in that the power of
the laser can decrease with age, along with the effective output
reducing due to dirt on the lens etc. All CDR drives should be able to
read CD-RW discs.
The end result is that an older drive is less likely to be able to read
CD-RW discs.

You should still use SetMan, OS3.5 doesn't implement any features it
does yet.
BTW whatever the docs say, run SetMan *AFTER* SetPatch, so that nasty

Subject: [afb] 3.5 & DOpus
Date: Mon, 08 Nov 1999 04:41:52 -0800
Hi all,
Now I now 3.5 is supposed to work just fine with DOpus Magellan
(excepting the AppIcons) but Ive been getting problems with my set-up
now.
Before I installed 3.5 All my backdrops would load fine, and stretch to
fit the screen (Super-Hi-Res-Laced (Dont start!)), now however they do
one of two things: either they tile themselves onscreen (which with
pictures not patterns dont look so good) or they stretch to fit but the
right 2/3s of the screen have evenly spaced white lines horizontally
across the picture while the left 1/3 appears normal.
Also, I occasionally have the problem where the programs or drawers
dont appear on screen. Memory disapears but no window appears. I have
to re-boot to correct the problem.
Also, the icons for my Ram: disk; CDs; and Disks all come up as an icon
of a desktop box - instead of what Ive set (They all appear fine in WB
without DOpus). Is this to be fixed with GPSofts upcomming patch?
I think thats about it for now. All in all, 3.5 has provided more
solutions than problems so Im happy. We just need to wheedle out the
bugs that are still there.
Bifford the youngest.
P.S. I have Use Newicons turned on and Discourage Newicons turned off
in DOpus.

Does running quake give you a virus? does typing a document give you a
virus? There is no way to tell him, it just doesn`t. The fact that there are
millions of people using it might convince him. Better still wait till he`s
gone out, then...... ;)

Where would you suggest Matt? After setting up the assigns? After
running Userstartup but before running WB?

Erm, so you set the image to stretch to the screen size? A major guess
here, but the new WB3.5 IPrefs may be to blame.

And now I enter the Twilight Zone... this happens to me occasionally. I
open a window in DOpus while simultaneously pulling down a menu, but
the menu just highlights and doesn't appear...

Which means that it'll load NewIcons if present. If you turned
Discourage Newicons on, then the default icon would load (I think).

hi,
whilst on the subject of RC5-64....
A new version of the client is now available.. *please*, *please*
*PLEASE* (i cannot stress this enough!) read the documentation for it on
the Web page before you use it.
it *does* contain some bugs...use the older (current) version to
actually do your flushing and fetching, and use the new 'beta'
to do the cracking.
why? Because this new version is about 30-50% faster on the 680x0 CPUs!
yes! 147kkeys/s on an 060 is sure better than 114 kkeys/s. the 030 and
020 have huge boosts.
A new proper client will be available in a month's time (or so.....) and
will feature all the new rc5de client parts - FIFO buffers (your first
keys in are your first out) and bigger buffers etc etc

Hi Paul
Yup, thats right. I did this and ended up with the plain old Beige
boxes. Ick! When I turned it back on and rebooted they were still
there so I had to use the UpdateNewIcons tool to replace them with
GlowIcons again. 2 minutes work, but still annoying.

I'd buy it now, to be honest. The only thing stopping me is the fact
that I've ordered quite a lot in the last few months (Wipeout, BVision,

I prefer GENESiS to Miami I have to say, but that is a minority opinion I

There is a user list in GENESiS that you can select a user from, just choose
Show users in the preferences and a drop down box will appear on the main

Well, Maarten is Dutch, so I didn't think it made any difference. Full
stop doesn't refer to any other character in American English, and I
checked the dot was at the same place on any qwerty keybords before
answering, so it should work... either that, or the dot on the numeric
keypad.

When I had cable fitted at home, the BT box thingy was totally removed.
Therefore, is it still possible to fit a BT Home Highway box?

Fairy snuff, but this is not new info, nor particularly abstruse, so people
*should* know the answer by now. Perhaps we should have put this as one of

Not all of it. If you check the OS 3.1 ROM build list in the NDK 3.1, you=

And if you bothered to check the OS3.5 installation, you'll
find that the 70k of Workbench code gets blatted at startup,
and loaded from disk!

Subject: [afb] Computer Interaction
Date: Mon, 08 Nov 1999 07:46:41 -0800
Im reading a book atm for my Disertation, which has brought up some
interesting ideas (written 1995). This is one part of it that really
hits the nail on the head. The book is: "Being Digital" by Nicholas
Negroponte. (Hodder & Stoughton)
"Likewise, the general interface with personal computers has been
treated as a physical design problem. But interface is not just about
the look and feel of a computer. It is about the creation of
personality, the design of intelligence, and building machines that can
recognize human expression.
A dog can recognize you from your gait more than one hundred yards
away, whereas a computer does not even know you are there. Almost any
pet can tell when you are angry, but a computer does not have a clue.
Even puppies know when they have done wrong; computers don`t.
The challenge for the next decade is not just to give people bigger
screens, better sound quality, and easier-to-use graphical input
devices. It is to make computers that know you, learn about your
needs, and understand verbal and nonverbal languages. A computer
should know the difference between your saying `Kissinger` and `kissing
her`, not because it can find the small acoustic difference, but
because it can understand the meaning. That's good interface design.
The burden of interaction today has been placed totally on the
shoulders of the human party. Something as banal as printing a
computer file can be a debilitaing exercise that resembles voodoo more
than respectable human behaviour. As a result, many adults are turned
off and claim to be hopelessly computer illiterate.
This will change."
(pp91/92)
That just about says it all really. An interface that learns and knows
you as an individual. Brilliant.

The easy answer is not to stretch backdrop images. The system scaling
routines are far from the prettiest available, and it slows down your
bootup while the scaling takes place. The best solution is to scale the
images in a paint/image processing program and save them out at the
correct size.

well, as you cant do such things with modern monitors, you change the
display instead....depending on where the mouse is located. as you move
the mouse to the left or right, newer items appear in the box. the
actual cursor doesnt move whilst the middle mouse button is pressed (for
example) so you switch between window info just by moving the mouse up,
down or sideways...no scroll bars ever again

Ditto, though at the most inopportune moments. Here is a peek into one
such moment:
At college:
"Hey guys! Come and have a look at my groovy Amiga!"
"There crap, but I'll take a peek."
At home:
"Let's turn this bitch on!"
"Wow, booted fast..."
"This is, what you may call it, Doom. I on the other hand prefer the
title ADoom." [Amiga-M]
"Hey, why did you quit?"
"I didn't. I multitasked to another screen."
"Ooh."
After some fiddling with various bits'n'bobs:
"...and now it has locked up."
"Never mind; just reboot."
"Oh shit, now the damn hard drives invalidated! Grr!"
(And yes, this HAS happened!)
